About Us

The Beginning
It was a cool yet vibrant night at the Tanglewood Shed. Violinist Joshua Bell just finished his performance of Saint-Saens Third Concerto with the BSO. It was a coincidence that both Randy and Helen (B.U.T.I. alums of ‘97) stood in line during intermission to meet Bell. Somehow the conversation struck up between them and ever since then they never stopped talking and became the best of friends.

The Attempts
Randy was a persistent one, but Helen had no idea.  After four years of distance, they found each other again in Baltimore and Boston.
The next big question: Where shall Helen end up for graduate school?  With the help of Randy, she was drawn to the environment at the New England Conservatory and encouraged by her teacher-to-be to study there.  Her Boston life was a happy one because Randy was there, though good and bad times. Even when they started dating again a few months into the school year, they were always best friends.

Temporary Separation
After having the luxury of dating for three years (yes, they conquered past the 1.5 year itch!), they realized that it was time to take charge of their careers. Randy pursued a Masters in Music at Carnegie Mellon and Helen decided to begin her doctorate at Stony Brook University in Long Island, NY. Those were the toughest 3 years of dating but somehow they pulled through and grew stronger both individually and as a couple.

Where are they now?
By the time graduation rolled along for Helen, she was happy enough to stay in New York for the time being. Randy could still visit and Helen would go visit him in Boston. But it was Randy who was feeling anxious and lonely. Would she feel compelled to move back to him in Boston? Read how they got engaged to see what happens…
