Tonight the good doctor performed surgery on her first—and unsuspecting—patient: my old bass, nicknamed “Gus” since I was in the 3rd grade. Helen and I were in the process of removing Gus’s g string so that we could install a Realist pickup. But then the soundpost fell! Luckily I found my old soundpost repair kit, which I bought in 1998 while at Tanglewood.

As you can see from the pictures (and soon, video) posted below, Helen got to work pretty quickly. Bass luthiers, watchout!

Today was our first day home and we got off to a fast start. First up was making a stop at the Department of Health to pick up a marriage license. It was a pretty quick and easy process. We just filled out a form with basic biographical info, paid a $60 cash fee, held up our right hands and took a “I do solemnly swear”-style oath, and bam… Got a license to qualify us for marriage! Yippee!!

Today Helen and I were walking through Chinatown, on our way to eat some wontun duck yee-mein soup, and we were strategizing about what the next few days would have to accomplish, since we’re leaving soon for Hawaii. We were both pretty excited to get things done, but it seemed like Helen was really anxious—which I figured out later, makes a lot more sense.

As we pondered over our twin bowls of yee-mein, I realized she thought that today (Saturday) is Sunday, and that tomorrow (Sunday) would be Monday. I blurted out, “damn! that’s why you’re confused… You need a calendar!!” And just as I said those words, the waitress behind us replied, “[something in Cantonese] … Cal-en-da?” Helen and I looked confusedly at each other and then said, “Yes, Calendar.” The waitress held up a finger to say ‘wait a moment’, as she dashed off behind the counter that sells char siu and roast duck. She emerged a minute later with a new calendar, wrapped in a shopping bag, and ready for its new owner.

Maybe next time I should blurt out, “Damn! You need a million dollars—or at least a free bowl of wontun noodle soup.”

THREE!! Our final three days in Boston will be jammed packed with things to do and tying up loose ends: teaching, pops gigs, purchasing sash fabric, building up publicity for WAITIKI, packing, charging batteries, and updating this blog. Yes, we will be sure to include you in every step of the way. We picked up our wedding bands today, and they are surely stunning, well-made in every way by the Boston Ring and Gem (aka BRAG). Along with this great find, we managed to walk into the first fabric store we saw in Chinatown, and picked two possible colors for our groomsmen sashes. The wedding party will look spectacular, so you’ll have to wait and see. This has been a very productive day indeed. Let the holiday parties begin!

This weekend Helen and I have been doing some nice work on a big surprise for anybody who reads this blog, is coming to our wedding, or is a friend of ours! So that probably includes you, fair reader. Unfortunately I can’t tell you anything more until it comes back to us (hint, hint). That will probably be sometime before Christmas. Hopefully in time for Dec. 27 (hmm, what’s on that day?), but definitely in time for January 3!! If you won’t be with us on either of those dates, don’t worry—we’ll make it available via this website and at least one other so you too can join in on the celebration.

Whoa, I can feel myself getting goosebumps, or chicken skin as they call it in Hawaii, as I’m typing this. I can’t believe how time is flying and soon we’ll be on a place to paradise. Wedding planning has been going well and we’re slowly getting more and more things checked off on our to-do list. One of the things being this website, which needed a serious facelift. The whole process took up the entire weekend, which was tedious but fun in a way, because it has been a while since we’ve taken upon a website making project. The last one we did together was the Music-in-Education Web Sourcebook, a compilation of music education journal articles and concepts that relates to our work at NEC. So this website is small in comparison, but it is definitely more enjoyable to work on because it relates to us personally and we can post anything we want. Freedom! Anyways, hope you all like it and find it easy to navigate.

In our wedding section, we’ve included subpages about each person in our wedding party. Not only do they each come from different points in our lives, they also come from different places and contribute a lot to who we are as individuals and as a couple. Believe it or not, we have yet to gather everyone together before the wedding. So keep an eye out for a possible time during the week of the wedding for a hang. I can’t wait to see everybody all together in one place, something that’ll happen only once in a lifetime. And it’ll happen at our wedding.

Things left to do: finalize RSVPs, make sashes, confirm cake and seating chart, get gifts and favors, maybe get another dress? More updates to come….

Labor Day weekend is typically the busiest time that Boston sees. The last few days of August into the first few days of September is when the bulk of the city’s apartments turnover. Unlike other cities, where landlords often offer a choice of leases (month to month, 6 month, two years, etc.) that begin throughout the year, Boston’s landlords prefer to align their leases with the beginning of the academic year. That means nearly everybody moves in on Sept. 1 and finishes their leases on August 31. (And yes, that also means that a lot of people are homeless between the evening of Aug. 31 and noon on Sept 1).

Luckily for Helen and I, this year is the first of many that we didn’t have to move out of one apartment and into another! That alone is cause to celebrate. We did, however, get the urge to do some cleaning and re-organizing of our apartment. We also went out on our annual furniture stroll to look for stuff people have thrown out.

This year’s stroll netted many great catches: a black metal book case, some new kitchen shelving, and a brand-new wood futon frame. The futon frame is replacing a similar catch from two years ago (that one was a black metal frame that has since been falling apart). I’ll put up some pictures later, once we get things assembled. In the meantime, here’s a picture of our new kitchen shelving.
