ALL THINGS FOOD
Traditional Hawaiian Food is among our favorite things to eat! Go to ONO HAWAIIAN FOODS (726 Kapauhulu Ave., near Waikiki) and order any of the special plates. Randy likes the Salt Meat Watercress (a la carte) and Helen recommends the pipikaula and haupia. Of course, no Hawaiian meal would be complete without poi, a purple paste made of smashed taro root. You can order it “fresh” or “day old” (tastes more sour).
“Local Food” is a unique hybrid of Chinese, Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Portuguese, and other cultural foods found distinctly in Hawaii.
A prototypical serving of local food is the plate lunch. A plate lunch consists of an entree, usually meat like teri beef, hamburger steak, mochiko chicken, or a stew like beef stew, curry, or chilli), two scoops of sticky white rice, and one scoop of macaroni salad. If you can’t decide what to get, then order a mix plate—the same thing as a plate lunch, but with 2 (or even 3) entree choices. You can read more about it with a different perspective here.

ARTS and LIVE MUSIC
are abundant in Honolulu. While in town, you can’t go wrong by visiting THE BISHOP MUSEUM (Hawaiian cultural artifacts & history), THE EAST-WEST CENTER, or THE HONOLULU ACADEMY OF ARTS. We also recommend hearing our friends at THE HONOLULU SYMPHONY and THE ROYAL HAWAIIAN BAND. In fact, if you’re staying in Waikiki, the Royal Hawaiian Band performs free concerts at the RHB Band Stand in Kapiolani Park and at Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu.
